Heading Tags

The H1 tag, or <H1> in HTML syntax, is the tag used to create page content headings.  HTML supports 6 headings, from H1 to H6, with H1 being the main page heading, and the rest are sub headings, with the importance decreasing as the number increases.

Put simply, from an SEO point of view, the H1 tag is the most important phrase or sentence on the page.  This tag should tell your website users, and also search engines, the topic of your web page.  After finalising a keyword research and keyword strategy, you should start by placing the most important keywords in your headings.  It is very important to keep in mind however, that besides search engines, the website will be primarily visited by human users, therefore keep your headings as human friendly as possible.

Furthermore, HTML headings provide structure to your pages.  It is important to bear in mind that pages without any structure whatsoever make it difficult for web crawlers to read and understand.
